THE WAYWARD SEED!

Bank of Wild Flowers

I must have been a wayward seed because here I was a very young flower, the only one in a sea of heather and other low lying shrubbery—Every day I grew taller and taller. I began to look out of place because I was higher than any of the other plants and I only looked down at them at night, but during the day I followed the sun. My neck is very long and my face is golden and I have a collar of yellow petals. I don’t know why I follow the sun, no-one has told me and there is no-one who is tall enough to whisper in my ear and tell me - everyone keeps coming out to look at me.

Am I special I wonder !

Alas the wind was very strong last night and this morning I am bent double, looking down at the earth and all my other friendly plants. The look of horror on their upturned faces when they opened their eyes to the light from the sun to see me in my terrible predicament was

Overwhelming.

They told me how proud they were to be in the same

garden bed with me and didn’t resent my being tall,

because everyone came to look not only at me

but at them as well.

Although I knew this was the end of me,

I thought I might like to know why I was so popular.

Heather said “Don’t you know !”

“Why you are a Sunflower !”

“You follow the sun and you are halfway to heaven and one of God’s chosen species !”

“You have nothing to worry about,

your face is your salvation !”

“You will be back again next year !”
